5 Simple Ways to Elevate Your Closet

A well-organized closet can transform your daily routine, making it easier to find what you need and inspiring you to wear what you own. Whether you have a spacious walk-in closet or a modest reach-in closet, these five simple tips will help you elevate your closet and bring a sense of order and style to your space.

Before jumping in, a quick note on the importance of decluttering your closet prior to elevating your space and giving everything a home. Taking time to review what you own, and keeping only what you love and actually wear will make organizing your belongings easier. These tips can also be applied to other storage in your bedroom, such as a dresser or stand-alone wardrobe. So here goes!

1. Display Your Favorite Accessories

Your accessories are not just functional items; they can also serve as beautiful decor pieces. Displaying your favorite accessories, such as handbags, hats, and scarves, can add a touch of personality to your closet while keeping everything easily accessible. Use hooks, shelves, or clear display cases to showcase these items. The back of the door (if applicable) can also be used to hang accessories such as scarves and purses. This will make your closet look more organized, inspire you to use your favorite things, and make it easier to choose the perfect accessory for your outfit.

2. Use a Set of Uniform Hangers

One of the simplest ways to elevate the look of your closet is to use a set of uniform hangers. Imagine walking into a clothing store and seeing clothes hung on a variety of wire, plastic, wood and velvet hangers.  You might not even be able to put your finger on it, but something feels off and less inviting to shop the space. Same goes for your closet. If you want to feel inspired to get dressed each day, investing in uniform hangers can change completely change the vibe in your closet. This small change can create a cohesive and streamlined appearance, making your closet look more organized and visually appealing. Velvet hangers are a popular choice because they prevent clothes from slipping and save space, but wooden or padded hangers can also add a touch of elegance. Whether you prefer wood, velvet or plastic, I highly recommend opting for a slim hanger to maximize your hanging space.

3. Use Shelf Dividers to Tidy Shelves

Shelves can quickly become a cluttered mess if not properly organized. Shelf dividers are a great solution to keep your shelves tidy and your items neatly separated. They can be used to organize stacks of clothing, keep handbags upright, and prevent piles from toppling over. You’ll maintain a cleaner and more organized closet by creating designated sections for different items. This works great for storing sweaters, pants or purses on a shelf. Plus, it will be easier to find what you need without digging through a disorganized pile. I recommend clear acrylic dividers for solid wood shelves or a wire option that clips into existing wire shelving.

4. Color Code Your Wardrobe

Color coding your wardrobe is a simple yet effective way to bring order to your closet. Arrange your clothes by color, starting with lighter shades and gradually moving to darker ones or a classic ROYGBIV to give your closet a rainbow look. This not only creates a visually appealing display but also makes it easier to find specific items. You’ll find when asking, “Where’s my black tshirt?” you can easily breeze to the section of black shirts to grab what you’re looking for. Color coding can help you identify gaps in your wardrobe and ensure that your favorite pieces are always within easy reach. Additionally, it can inspire new outfit combinations by grouping similar colors together.

5. Use Drawer Dividers to Tidy Drawers

Drawers are notorious for becoming jumbled messes, but drawer dividers can help you keep everything in its place. Use dividers to separate different types of items, such as socks, underwear, and accessories. This will make it easier to find what you need and prevent items from getting tangled or lost. Drawer dividers come in various shapes and sizes, so you can customize them to fit your specific needs. Be sure to measure your drawers' depth and height to grab the right size organizers. For shallow drawers (less than 5 inches) I recommend a 2-3’’ high divider. For deeper drawers, opt for a 5’’ divider.

Drawer dividers are also very effective when combined with a folding method known as file folding. This method allows you to store items upright and brings visibility to everything stored in the drawer, rather than stacking items on top of each other. You can easily thumb through your options, like flicking through a filing cabinet to find what you need. I’ve found since incorporating file folding into my drawers that I wear what I have and can easily identify items that never get worn which helps with the annual review/purge of the closet.

Keeping your drawers organized will maximize your storage space and make your daily routine more efficient.

By implementing these five simple tips, you can take your closet from chaos to curated . Displaying your favorite accessories, using uniform hangers, adding shelf and drawer dividers, and color coding your wardrobe are easy ways to bring order and style to your closet. With a little effort and creativity, you can create a closet that looks great and makes your life easier.
